A plain-language guide to mobility technology terms
Clear vocabulary for asking better questions without turning people into engineers.
Every person, device and journey is different. A qualified provider can help with questions about individual needs and options.
Words should clarify
Terms such as powered, passive, wearable, assistive and rehabilitation can mean different things in different contexts. Ask a provider to define a term in relation to the exact device and activity.
Technology does not remove context
A technical description cannot tell you whether a device is appropriate for a particular person or environment. Fit, training and support remain part of the decision.
Keep the question human
The most useful question is usually practical: what would this change in a real day, and what would still need support?
